The Caribbean People Organization, Inc. (CPO) members formed its organization on Monday, October 20, 2014 with the vision to introduce the Caribbean culture and heritage with a fun family oriented and diverse multi-cultural festival. CPO soon began making plans to coordinate a unique festival, never presented before in Virginia Beach, VA, by using Caribbean cuisine, music, arts and fellowship among the community on a grand stage called Virginia Jerk Fest.
As we continued to press forward to coordinate our upcoming fundraiser, we than discovered that we shared another common ground within the organization aside from our membership. We discovered that we knew of family members and friends affected by this frequently accepted behavior, often unspoken, of domestic violence.
CPO’s common ground developed the urgency to not be bystanders of domestic violence but to do something more than just provide entertainment at a festival, giving back to the community and raise domestic violence awareness. We found it necessary to form an outreach resource and service against the sorrow victims felt from the overwhelming silence of domestic violence. CPO's hope with our new found mission we can help those trapped in a never ending cyce of abuse.
Domestic violence does not discriminate, it affects us all, women, children and even men. No one should endure such abuse from unwelcomed behavior that has grown to become accpeted in our communities. Our team is dedicated to break a never ending cycle of abusers and free our victims of such. CPO filed for both its corporation and 501(c)(3) nonprofit status which was later approved on Wednesday, January 7, 2015.
